Research:


The college has the best tradition of excellent need-based and practical oriented research work. The college has undertaken research on various aspects of livestock farming, crossbreeding and improvement in buffalo. As an all India measure of improving livestock of the country, the cattle sterility scheme was introduced for the first time n this college. The college has carried out extensive work on calf mortality, etiological factors, diagnosis and treatment. . This study was of immense use to the dairy farmers. Extensive work in relation to the detection of subclinical mastitis in farm animals and practical oriented work pertaining to fluorosis was carried out. Researches on several viral and bacterial diseases like mucosal disease complex, Rinderpest, Foot and Mouth Diseases, Gumboro have also been carried out.

 

A separate Radio Isotope Laboratory was established and studies pertaining to diagnosis of fertility and infertility including hormonal estimations are being undertaken to help farming community. The college was the first to identify the Gumboro disease virus in poultry. Stages of management aspects particularly in relation to the heat stress, salt toxicity housing system and effect of various energy levels of economic traits in growing and laying quails were also undertaken.


There are some research projects financed by different agencies like I.C.A.R., INDO-US AlD, APEDA, EEC, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, etc. Some research projects have already been completed and some are still in progress. Development of technology in the manufacture of insulin and heparin from buffalo pancreas and lungs was successfully completed and the team earned a Best Research Award by I.C.A.R. Extensive research work on feeding trials on recycling of slaughterhouse by-products, particularly the rumen digesta on large scale under INDO-US AID project was undertaken.

 

There is much work on the nutritive evaluation of feeding of unconventional feed ingredients to reduce the cost of feeding of animals in different species. Similarly, work in relation to allied aspects was undertaken with the financial assistance of World Bank and the ICAR under the NARP project presently work on ‘Complete Ration’ in cattle is in progress under the Network programmes.

 

Work on basic aspects pertaining to the embryo transfer technology is also being undertaken and is in progress under the Network programmes on Embryo Transfer Technology.

 

From the financial help of different agencies work was undertaken on the establishment of Microbial standards for meat and meat products, microbiological quality of milk and milk products, meat speciation and detection of adulteration of meats, preservation of meats and by-product development. Various aspects pertaining to the quality control have been constituted and the same has been appreciated at the national level with increasing national and international competition and tremendous technological advance at rapid strides, the research wing is strengthened and it intends to extend a global linkage through internet.

 

A Veterinary Nuclear Medicine Centre has been established at Bombay Veterinary College for the first time in India with financial support from BARC. Similarly World Bank assistance from ICAR, Country’s first Animal Blood Component Bank has also been applied in the college.
